Mozilla Orbit has shut down: the best alternatives
Orbit by Mozilla was a free Firefox add-on that summarised pages, emails and video transcripts. It closed on 26 June 2025. This page covers what replaces it. One thing first: we make a different app that is also called Orbit, and it is not a replacement for Mozilla's.
Mozilla's Orbit is gone and can't be reinstalled. If you use Firefox, the closest replacement is built in: the AI chatbot in Firefox's sidebar can summarise the page you're reading with Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini or Mistral, and link previews can show AI key points worked out on your own device. If privacy was why you liked Orbit, Brave's Leo is the nearest match: no account, chats not kept or used for training, and you can bring your own local model. Chrome users have Gemini in Chrome.
What Mozilla Orbit was, and when it closed
Mozilla's own help page now says: "Orbit is no longer available as of June 26, 2025" (Mozilla Support, Orbit FAQ). While it ran, Mozilla described it as "a free Firefox add on that allows you to quickly summarize emails, docs, articles, and video transcripts across the web without sacrificing your privacy", working directly on sites including Google Docs, Gmail, Wikipedia and YouTube. You could also ask it questions about the page.
Its selling point was privacy. It needed no account, it ran a Mistral 7B model hosted by Mozilla, queries were "never shared with Mistral or any other services", and the session was erased when you left the page (same page).
Coverage at the time noted that Mozilla closed it alongside its Deep Fake Detector add-on (PCWorld, 11 June 2025), and that many of its jobs had moved into Firefox itself, through the sidebar's AI chatbots, though those use third-party AI providers rather than a model hosted by Mozilla (OMG! Ubuntu, June 2025).
Not the same Orbit. This site is for Orbit by SUPERORBIT, a desktop app for Mac and Windows that runs Claude, Grok and Codex chats. It has no connection to Mozilla and isn't a Firefox add-on. If you came here looking for Mozilla's Orbit, the alternatives below are what you want.
The alternatives
Checked 24 October 2026. Each fact links to the product's own page. Browser AI features roll out in stages, so availability can depend on your version, country and account.
1. Firefox's AI chatbot sidebar
Best for: Firefox users who want page summaries without installing anything.
Firefox's sidebar can hold an AI chatbot of your choice: Anthropic Claude, ChatGPT, Google Gemini or Mistral Vibe. Mozilla says each "can assist with tasks such as summarizing what you're reading, brainstorming ideas, or helping you write", and the help page covers a Summarize page option and suggested prompts when you select text (Mozilla Support, AI chatbots in Firefox).
Trade-off: you're using that provider under its own terms and privacy policy, which Mozilla points out on the same page. It isn't Mozilla-hosted, as Orbit was.
2. Firefox link previews with AI key points
Best for: privacy-first Firefox users who want the gist before opening a link.
From Firefox 142, a long press on a link (or right-click, Preview Link) shows a preview card, and you can let AI "read the beginning of the page and generate a few bullet points". Mozilla says the AI runs on your device and needs at least 3 GB of free memory. It's being rolled out gradually, so you may not have it yet (Mozilla Support, link preview).
Trade-off: it summarises the start of a linked page, not the whole page you're on, and you can't ask follow-up questions.
3. Brave Leo
Best for: people who chose Orbit for its privacy.
Leo is the assistant built into the Brave browser. Brave says you can "ask Leo to summarize webpages", and that it can analyse PDFs, Google Docs and Google Sheets. "Leo doesn't retain or share chats, or use them for additional model training. No account or login is required." You can also bring your own models, local or remote. It's free, with a paid Premium tier for more models (brave.com/leo).
Trade-off: you have to switch browsers to Brave.
4. Gemini in Chrome
Best for: Chrome users, especially in Google's apps.
Google says Gemini in Chrome "delivers concise summaries of articles, pages or threads directly in your browser", can summarise across your open tabs and works with your Google apps (Gemini in Chrome). It needs setup, and availability varies by country and account.
Trade-off: it's Chrome and a Google account, which is the opposite of Orbit's no-account approach.
5. Claude in Chrome
Best for: Claude subscribers who want more than a summary.
Anthropic's Chrome extension "reads the page you're signed in to, then clicks, types, and fills forms while you decide what happens next". It's available on all paid Claude plans (Claude in Chrome).
Trade-off: it's a paid plan and does far more than Orbit did, which is more than many people want.
What about video summaries?
Mozilla's Orbit summarised video transcripts on sites like YouTube. We couldn't confirm on the providers' own pages, today, which of these alternatives summarise videos by their transcript, so we haven't listed that as a feature for any of them. If it matters to you, try it on a video you know well before you rely on it.

Where Orbit by SUPERORBIT fits, if at all
For most people who used Mozilla's Orbit, it doesn't. Our Orbit isn't a browser add-on or a summariser, it's a desktop app for people who work with AI all day: Claude, Grok and Codex chats (we call them Orbs) filed under projects, with a terminal, an editor, a planner, an inbox and an always-on assistant called the Moon. It's a subscription, $29 a month (£29 / €29 locally) after a 7-day trial, and it runs on your own Claude or SuperGrok plan or OpenAI key.
The one overlap: Orbit has a real Chromium browser inside it, and your Orbs can read any page you open, including ones behind your sign-in, then summarise it, answer questions about it or check it for you. If you already pay for Claude or SuperGrok and want summaries as one small part of a bigger working day, that may suit you. See the browser and what Orbit is. If you just want a quick summary in Firefox, use the sidebar.
Common questions
Can I still install Mozilla Orbit?
No. Mozilla says Orbit is no longer available as of 26 June 2025, and its help article is no longer maintained.
Why did Mozilla shut Orbit down?
Coverage at the time linked it to Mozilla focusing its resources on Firefox itself, where AI chatbots and page summaries now sit in the sidebar. Mozilla closed its Deep Fake Detector add-on on the same date.
What is the most private alternative to Mozilla Orbit?
Firefox's link previews run their AI on your own device. Brave Leo needs no account and says it doesn't keep chats or train on them, and it lets you use a local model.
Is superorbit.app Mozilla's Orbit?
No. Orbit by SUPERORBIT is an unrelated desktop app made by SUPERORBIT LTD in the UK. It has never been part of Mozilla or Firefox.
Does Firefox summarise pages without an add-on?
Yes. Choose a chatbot in the sidebar and use its page summary, or turn on AI key points in link previews if your Firefox has them.
